Biodegradable Sunscreen..Mother's Market

Wanted to share this tip now. Alex has an upcoming blog article she wrote which will be posted on March 4th. Thought if you were interested, you might want a few more days to make this purchase. If you are from Southern California you might be familiar with Mother's Market check out this link for location.

Alex has found a biodegradable suntan lotion that will work for use at Yalku Lagoon for snorkeling. She says she has a bottle to share but if anyone else can get one that would be great for those guests who are out of the area. I will try and check out our local health food store to see if they might have one as well. Alex said they also sell this at the lagoon.

Thanks Alex for this helpful tip! Roger is gonna love you as my "Pale Face -Body Boy" will need the sunscreen for sure.

Snorkeling Excursion Update...yes we're trying!

Although details are still in the works. Remember "Manana Time"? Rest assure we will be going Snorkeling! Alex is still awaiting specific response to the details of our snorkel trip. I am working with Alex to make this a better excursion then originally planned. So please be patient and more importantly trust me. I have your back, so relax and just show up!

After researching and attaining information from our guests and tour operator, I made a decision that we will be looking at this snorkel excursion to be a lagoon site verses the open ocean reef, I had originally proposed. There was a number of factors to consider but one of the major one was the opportunity for ALL to participate and two the potential variety of sea life we would actually be able to experience (minus the potential jellyfish/stings).... Yes, the lagoon won!

Our Snorkel trip will be to Yal-ku in Akumal, which is located south of Playa del Carmen. It is a
lagoon with water depth of 6-15 feet. As you can see by the photo provided by LocoGringo.com the lagoon is quite large although in my findings from TravelYucatan.com depending on how fast you swim you should be able to cover the lagoon in 1 to 1 & 1/2 hours.

The excursion will not require a boat trip and there are handy platforms and stairs for us to utilize making it easy for all (yes, I'm not proud...I like this option!) I understand that the grounds surrounding the lagoon is supposedly manicured and has waterfront benches, paths and statues. It was noted that there are larger sea creatures at the entrance of the lagoon by the opening to the sea. Be advised that it is also much deeper there.

The protective rule for this lagoon is that there is no feeding the fish and also NO SUNSCREEN so bring a t-shirt or snorkel shirt to wear if you are sun sensitive.

Alex share this bit of information which she received from the tour operator that might be of interest to you...

Akumal is the only truly ecologically protected area on the coast and the community puts alot of effort into preserving the natural state of Yal-Ku. There is even an organization called Friends of Yal-Ku that monitors the conditions of the lagoon. In any case, compared to any of the cenotes in the area Yal-Ku is definitely cleaner because it has it's own self cleaning system ... freshwater filtered by limestone flows out to the ocean so the water never gets stagnant.

There is more detail on the website Locogringo.com and also Travel Yucatan.com. These two websites have been very helpful resources for me as I too am a newcomer to this region. So here's to the adventure and for those more experienced snorkelers/swimmers still wanting to swim in the 2nd largest reef? You can taxi from our resort to Puerto Morelos towards the pier or head to the local dive shops and they can set you up. We will still have a couple of days to do this.

Just so you know, Alex and I are trying to set-up the possibility to have a no-host stop for lunch or shopping in Playa del Carmen on our way back. Figured this was the perfect opportunity to spend a couple of hours to see what this town has to offer. What more time? You can perhaps share a taxi and go another day. As soon as I receive more updated information , I will announce it here on the blog. So you know the routine...stay tuned!

Snorkeling...view the sea's garden!

One of the treasured jewels of the Riviera Maya & the Caribbean is the turquoise blue sea and the white sand beaches. As I've written in previous articles in the blog off the coast of our NOW Jade Resort & Spa is the 2nd largest reef in the world also know as the National Marine Park.

At some point on our days at our resort, we will probably decide to go snorkeling. Although our resort is on the beach. Good snorkeling needs coral not sandy beaches. So if this is of a possible interest please send me an email so I can try and figure out how many of us might be in a group as I am working with Alex to offer an option for a snorkeling excursion.

As a reminder Alex's Scuba Diving Excursion is NOT for Snorkelers. So we will have to 'venture our own sea garden tour. I am finding that snorkeling is anywhere between $25 - $40 per person, not including tipping our guide. Saw this particular link Puerto Morelos Snorkeling that utilizes "Diving Dogs Tours". Cute name, huh? There were a few things that looked intriguing to me, smaller group of 8, accommodated beginners as well as expert snorkelers. Plus it promoted an educational ecotourist approach to saving the coral, enlightening tourists with education, conservation & understanding the importance of co-habitating sea life, it's environment and visitors such as us.

In my research it seems getting your own mask might be a good thing. Many of the masks that are offered are not the best and it seems the rentals leak, which can be annoying. Life vest are a must on "Diving Dogs Tours" which indicates to me their safety and also their concern that the fragile coral are kept safe from destruction. I also checked out some reviews on tripadvisor and the past guests had good things to say about "Diving Dogs Tours" so let's see do we have at least 8 for a morning snorkel on Tuesday, March 8? I know why morning? Well the waters tend to be calmer, less crowd and competition. Roger and I are interested in snorkeling the 2nd largest reef in the world...great prelude to the Great barrier Reef, 'ey mate?!

Email me, so I can work with Alex on this opportunity. The Diving Dogs Tour is one of many operators. Because of the national park, we will need to go with a certified operator. And that's where Alex is doing her thing to help me out. Hope you can join us - snorkeling doesn't require certification as scuba does and it's a lot less equipment as well.

In the meantime checkout the link below & remember email me of your interest....
